Imported questions as an exam

liveForTeaching staffAdministration

Turn an imported question pool (QTI) into a multiple-choice exam of exam creation with one click — release it, count attempts, assess it like any other.

Why#

Whoever brings their inventory also wants to bring their exams — often the most valuable part of the whole course inventory. Nobody should have to retype questions for that.

How it works#

Click pathCourse packageQuestion poolAdopt as exam

  1. 1Deliver the course package with the question pool (QTI 1.2 or 2.x/3, also inside a Common Cartridge); the pool appears in the package as a separate item of the outline.
  2. 2Open the pool. Above the questions, authors (lecturers, administration, operator) see the field “Adopt as exam”.
  3. 3Check or change the title and choose “Create exam”.
  4. 4The feedback states how many questions were adopted and lists every question that did not fit, with the reason.
  5. 5“Open exam” leads into exam creation: the new multiple-choice exam is there as a draft, can be edited and is released like any other.

Settings and switches#

  • Switchable per tenantDefault: onModule: Prüfungen
  • Part of the module “Exams”. The course package itself needs the interfaces (SCORM, Common Cartridge).

What is adopted#

  • every question with text, exactly four answers and one valid correct answer — with an explanation if the pool has one
  • at most 200 items per exam; anything beyond that is reported
  • not adopted and reported with a reason: a different number of answers, no valid solution, empty text, text too long
  • Matching questions, cloze texts with tolerances and items with partial points were already reported by the import; they are listed in the package under “not adopted”

What the exam can do afterwards#

It is an ordinary multiple-choice exam of exam creation: release for a class or via a link, count attempts (with a maximum per person), assess immediately, result in the achievement archive, certificate on passing.

Camera and behaviour proctoring currently applies to the course exam, not to exams from exam creation — this also applies here.

Who may do what#

  • Only authors may create it: registered lecturers, administration and operator — the same barrier as “New exam”.
  • Only a pool of your own tenant is read; the exam belongs to the author and their tenant.

Tips#

  • The platform's multiple-choice exam knows exactly four answers. Questions with two, three or five answers are neither padded nor shortened but reported — an invented fourth answer changes the question.
  • The exercise in the package stays as it is: ungraded. The exam is a copy; changes to it do not affect the pool.
  • Every adopted question counts one point; weights, pass mark (default 60 %) and explanations can be adjusted in the exam's editor.
