Why#

One tap instead of typing an address — and a surface that feels like an app.

How it works#

  1. 1Open the campus in the phone's browser (address /g-uds-demo).
  2. 2In the browser's menu choose “Add to home screen” (depending on the browser “Install” or “Add app”) (Fig. 1).

Settings and switches#

No switch of its own in the feature catalogue — the feature belongs to its surroundings.

How it works#

A manifest describes name, icon, start page (the learning arena), colours and orientation; a small background service makes the campus installable. It is only registered for the campus area and passes every request on to the network unchanged — it deliberately buffers nothing.

Web app or app from the store?#

The web app is available today and needs no installation from a store. It does not offer notifications, storage on the device or working offline — that is a matter for the planned apps.

Tips#

  • The web app caches nothing: it loads every page fresh from the network and can therefore never show outdated content. It does not work without a connection.
  • It only applies to the campus; the rest of the website remains an ordinary website.
  • On the home screen it is called “Learning arena”; the full name carries the operator of the installation. The avatar figure serves as the icon.
