Several speakers on one slide

liveForTeaching staff

Interview and conversation: a slide's narration is divided into sections, every section has its speaker with their own figure and voice — the videos are ordered per section on request and played seamlessly one after another in the player.

Why#

A conversation between two experts explains some things better than a lecture — for example a lecturer and an expert taking turns on the same slide.

How it works#

Click pathSlide editorInsertSeveral speakers

  1. 1In the slide editor “Insert” → “Several speakers”: “Add speaker”, choose a name and figure (the voice comes from the figure), “Place spot on the slide” and move and scale the spot on the slide.
  2. 2Under “Who speaks which sentence” assign every sentence of the narration to a speaker (Fig. 1). Consecutive sentences of the same speaker form a section; the order of the sentences is the order of the sequence.
Fig. 1 The field “Several speakers”: the speakers with figure and spot and below them “Who speaks which sentence”.

  3. 3Under “Videos per section” is the sequence: who speaks in which order and the status of every video — “Video ready”, “In progress”, “Outdated”, “Video missing”, “Voice missing”, “Figure missing”. With several course languages the language is chosen at the top right.
  4. 4Missing sections are preselected, outdated ones are not. Below that the estimated computing minutes (1.2 per section). “Order sections” and then “Yes, order” commission the selected sections — nothing is ordered before that.
  5. 5Once all sections of a slide are ready, the course player plays them one after another: every speaker with their own voice, a guest at their spot on the slide, the name of the person speaking is visible. Subtitles, reveal, read-along and speed follow the whole sequence.

Settings and switches#

  • Switchable per tenantDefault: onModule: Kurs-Studio
  • Part of the module “Course Studio”; switchable per tenant. If the switch is off, there is no order button and no sequence in the player.

Ordering and costs#

  • one video per section with figure, voice and text of the person speaking
  • only on request and after confirmation; the estimated computing minutes are shown beforehand
  • at most three new orders per call; what remains open is reported and can be ordered again
  • a video that is already finished or running is not ordered a second time
  • new recordings speak with the course's voice model (setting “Voice model”)

Other languages#

  • translation happens per section, not for the whole slide — so in every language who speaks which sentence is preserved
  • the translation is created when ordering and stored for the player

In the player#

  • the sequence only runs if every section of the slide is ready in this language
  • the next section is preloaded; the switch happens without a pause
  • if a section is missing or outdated, the course's speaker speaks the whole slide as before, and guests appear as still images at their spots

Tips#

  • Every face speaks only with its own voice: a guest without a voice of their own gets no order — never the course voice.
  • If a sentence is changed, it loses its assignment and falls back to the course's speaker; it is never put into a stranger's mouth.
  • Finished videos are never re-rendered automatically. A changed section is shown as “Outdated”; it is only ordered again if it is selected and the order is confirmed.
  • What is ordered is the saved state of an accepted slide in a published course. The order rejects unsaved changes.
